I began my training in Japanese martial arts in 1994 while in college. As a kid I watched an Aikido demonstration, and while I wasn’t allowed to take classes then, the desire to move like those graceful people in strange flowing pants stuck with me. Later I was inspired to study in a dedicated sword school and look into the historical arts that gave rise to Aikido (judo, jujutsu, and aikijujutsu). Eventually that training led me to groups that specifically studied the bodywork behind many martial arts (often referred to as “Internal Power”). In my teaching, I strive to be clear and transparent and to create a space where my students and training partners have an opportunity to become much better than they perhaps thought possible. I now hold the ranks of nidan (2nd degree black belt, 2001) in Aikido, yondan (4th degree black belt, 2006) and renshi (full teacher, 2012) in Shinto Ryu Iai-Battojutsu, and Sr. Instructor in Icho Ryu Aiki-budo.

Having developed a strong interest in martial arts, including doing wrestling and judo during high school, I began my Aikido training in 1996. Wanting to further my practice, I began studying a traditional Japanese sword art in 1999. Meeting Don Angier in 2002 sparked my curiosity in the root arts of Aikido, such as Aikijujutsu, jujutsu, and other weapon arts. This led me to train with Neil Yamamoto in 2002, who instilled in me the phrase “Make it work, make it better.” In 2006, I was introduced to the world of internal training, which prompted me to deeply rework everything I knew. My teaching and training styles incorporate elements from various sources, including Neil Yamamoto, Akuzawa Minoru of the Aunkai, Robby Pellet and his knowledge of Shinto Ryu and Soto Zen Buddhism, Dan Harden’s Sangenkai, and the teachings of Takeshi Mochizuki of Shinto Seibu Ryu Iai-Battojutsu. I aim to be transparent about the influences on my teaching and hope that this knowledge will benefit my fellow instructors and students. The work I have done has made me a better martial artist, and I aspire to offer that to my students and training partners. Currently, I hold the ranks of a 2nd-degree black belt in Aikido (2005), a yondan (4th-degree black belt) and renshi (full teacher) in Shinto Ryu Iai-Battojutsu (2006 and 2012, respectively), and a Senior Instructor in Icho Ryu Aiki-budo.
